The University of Colorado Denver recently released one of the most exciting studies examining CBD’s effectiveness on nightmares. Researchers involved in this trial gave CBD pills to a group of PTSD patients, many of whom suffered from night terrors. Within eight weeks, 91 percent of patients said they noticed a significant reduction in symptoms. We should note that all of these PTSD patients were regularly seeing a psychiatrist throughout this trial. While CBD may be a useful adjunct therapy, it is no replacement for professional mental health counseling. This new trial builds on previous studies out of CU Denver examining CBD’s sedative potential. For instance, a 2019 study from the same university examined how well CBD affected anxiety patients’ sleep quality. Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, gave Yasmin Tayag terrible nightmares. Or maybe it didn’t.
When the hellish nightmares started, the CBD was the only thing she could think to blame — but her subsequent investigation revealed that, despite its growing ubiquity, no one seems to really know what CBD does.
The logic behind Tayag’s suspicion that the CBD oil caused her nightmares is sound — after all, the dreams started when she started using the oil, and stopped when she stopped.
Ultimately, Tayag was left with little choice but to accept that her suspicion about a link between the oil and her nightmares would remain unconfirmed — another indication that our best understanding of CBD remains thin.
She even found others online who shared her experience. But then she also found people who said the compound prevented them from having dreams, and others who claimed it gave them vivid dreams that weren’t scary.
