Weed Seeds This Fall Means More Weeds Next Spring

Control annual weeds now in fallow areas to prevent seed set. Also, now is the time to start considering ways to manage perennials in small grain stubble.

Now is the time to think about controlling summer annual weeds prior to seed set in cropping situations where possible. Preventing seed production is important for driving down the weed seed bank and reducing the need for weed control inputs (i.e. herbicides). It is rather easy to prevent weed seed production following a cereal grain such as wheat, barley, or oats as well as some vegetable crops such as sweet corn or snap beans. Proper timing of the control practice is essential in preventing seed production. In general, below is a summary of estimated seed drop for various weed species:

  • Giant foxtail: late August and peak seed rain usually occurs from late September through the month of October
  • Yellow foxtail: early August and continues into late October
  • Pigweed species: begin to produce mature seed by mid-August
  • Lambsquarters and ragweed: generally, do not mature until the month of September
  • Palmer amaranth or waterhemp: make sure to monitor them routinely over the next couple months and control any regrowth or new seedlings before they set seed. Palmer amaranth plants notoriously retain their seeds late into the summer and fall and thus seeds don’t necessarily fall to the ground upon maturity but are usually spread via the combine.

To prevent seed production, fields can be sprayed with an effective herbicide or mowed once or twice. Glyphosate is particularly effective at stopping grass growth and reproduction. The plant growth regulators (2,4-D and dicamba) would probably be a better choice for broadleaf weeds. With giant foxtail, even treating the field by mid-September can greatly reduce seed production. If seed heads are present, check suspect fields to determine how advanced flowering and seed rain are and time control practices accordingly. In alfalfa or pastures, if weeds are taller than the forage, consider running a brush-hog at a high setting to clip off the immature weed seed heads above the forage canopy. Taking the time to prevent seed production this year can make a big difference next year. About 80% of weeds next season come from weed seed this fall. For more information on weed emergence, weed seed set, and seedbank dynamics, refer to “A Practical Guide for Integrated Weed Management in Mid-Atlantic Grain Crops.”

In addition, many perennial broadleaves are evident in these same small grain stubble fields. The challenge with perennial weeds at this time of year is the fact they are still in the vegetative and reproductive phases. Therefore, most of the plant sugars are not being significantly transported to the roots and a herbicide application now will mostly only impact the top-growth. One consideration would be to mow those fields soon to prevent seed production and allow regrowth to occur. Then apply an effective systemic herbicide (ie, glyphosate, 2,4-D, dicamba) in late September or early October so the herbicide will be transported to the roots for more effective control.

Regular Old-School Seeds

Regular seeds remain popular with old school growers who don’t mind seeing male plants. Some growers even make their own crosses using male plants to produce pollen. Dutch Passion maintain one of the largest collections of original varieties in regular seeds, which produce roughly equal numbers of male and female plants. Many of these have been used by smaller seed companies as the basis for their own seed collections.

Choose from potent and dank Afghani Kush strains such as the cannabis cup winning Mazar. Or grow your own legendary regular strains such as the heavy yielding Power Plant or the resin frosted White Widow from our classics range which allow you to kick back and relax. It doesn’t get much more old school than regular seeds, and Dutch Passion have one of the largest remaining collections in the industry for you to enjoy.

Ten Most Common Questions About Cannabis Seeds

Here are some of the most common questions about cannabis seeds. If you have any questions about the order process, seeds, payment options or shipping please also check our FAQ or contact us directly.

What do cannabis seeds look like?

Cannabis seeds are generally small brown seeds often with shades of grey as well as lighter and darker colours. Only green or white seeds are not ripe enough. You can’t tell whether the seeds are feminised seeds, autoflower seeds or regular seeds from visual appearance alone. Hemp seeds and cannabis seeds look the same.

How to germinate cannabis seeds?

There are several different methods, read about them in our seed germination guide.

How to store cannabis seeds?

Cannabis seeds will be viable for several years if they are stored in a cool, dry and dark place around 5ºC. The door of a typical kitchen fridge is ideal. Make sure to seal the seeds in a dry plastic bag.

How many cannabis seeds per plant?

Usually one cannabis seed produces one plant. Occasionally you can get twin plants, in other words 2 from the same seed.

How long do cannabis seeds last?

Many growers will keep their cannabis seeds for several years. The older the seed, the lower the germination rates eventually become. But cold storing the seeds should allow them to retain good viability for about 3 to 5 years.

What is the difference between cannabis and hemp seeds?

Cannabis seeds grow into plants that may be rich in THC and other cannabinoids. Hemp seeds tend to produce CBD rich plants which are very low in THC. Both hemp and cannabis seeds are rich in essential Omega fatty acids. Hemp seeds are cheaper than cannabis seeds and are often used nutritionally.

Do you ship seeds to my country?

We ship our cannabis seeds to the EU, UK and elsewhere. Dutch Passion don’t ship seeds to the USA or Canada, but our International Seed Distributors do. They will also ship our seeds to many other parts of the world. The list of countries we ship seeds to often changes. Please refer to our FAQ to find the latest list of countries that we ship seeds to.

What are the easiest cannabis varieties to grow indoor/outdoor?

Many new growers find that autoflowering cannabis seeds are an easy way to get started. Indoors, autoflower seeds are ready after around 11 weeks, grown under 20 hours of daily light for optimal results. Outdoors they take longer, around 100 days from seed to harvest. Read our blog on how to grow autoflower seeds.

How do I decide which grow method and equipment to buy?

There are lots of options, this tells you that weed seeds are easy to grow across a wide variety of conditions. There is a range of options to suit growers of varying experience and budgets. Try researching online, chatting to friends, or visiting a grow shop to learn more.

What is the difference between auto and photoperiod cannabis varieties?

Photoperiod cannabis varieties don’t start to flower until the amount of daily light they receive drops to around 12 hours. This allows you some level of control over the size and timing of your plants when they bloom. Autoflower varieties will grow under the same light cycle from seed to harvest, going into bloom ‘automatically’ without any reduction in light hours.
